Akaso EK7000 Review – Ultra HD Camcorder 12MP

This waterproof 1080p and 4K action camera came in at the right time, when everyone is shooting and posting and up you need to up the ante to stand out. Also, not everyone has £300 or more to buy a GoPro. Let’s introduce the formidable Akaso EK700.

The unit gives you the option of shooting in 1080p 30fps, 1080p 60fps and 4K 25fps, all of which you can switch interchangeably from the camera’s controls with ease. You can preview the recording from the 2 inch LED camera. With a super wide 170 degrees’ lens, you can capture all you do in any weather condition. The device is waterproof with the protective case on.

Switchable from a remote control are four shooting modes. Shooting Video mode offer decent quality video that works best in bright, clear conditions.  Still photos mode can capture up to 12MP 4608*2592 photos in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Burst Photos mode will take 3 photos in 3 seconds while Time-lapse Mode you can capture a series of jpg photos in a frequency that is much lower than that used to view the photos. When you play them later, they will seem to move faster, thus lapping.

The EK7000 is designed for ease of mobility, with its small size and light weight. Although the battery drains fast which worsens with 4K, 1 hour and 40 minutes on 4k is above what competitors offer. With lower resolutions come longer battery life. It comes with a dual shock charger and two of 1050mAh Li-ion batteries, so you have a spare.

With more buttons, the unit is easy to use, especially if you have used a GoPro before. The menu is quite simple but does its job, changing settings and modes. The large screen at the back, though not an LCD or a touch screen, is used for a live preview, playback and menu operation.

Connection with smart devices is made easier with the iSmart DV app, a great utility available for both Android and iOS. It comes with a 2.4GHz wireless remote that is splash proof and can be worn like a watch. A con though, it does not come with a memory card.
