Makita DJV180Z 18v Jigsaw Review
Makita is a power tools manufacturer that has been operating in many countries since 1915. One of their most purchased products all over the world are the cordless jigsaws, being the Makita DJV180Z the most powerful one.
In fact, the Makita products are so popular in the UK that we could talk for hours about the incredible benefits of their products, but let’s just limit ourselves to explain you everything you need to know about the Makita DJV180Z.
What we look for in jigsaws is 1) power 2) lightness, both features of the Makita DJV180Z.
We are talking about the most reliable jigsaw in the market, cutting almost any material with the Makita DJV180Z will be effortless.
Probably one of the best features of this product is that it doesn’t have an electrical cord attached to it, making all the cutting tasks much safer and faster.
- Maximum in wood 135 mm
- Maximum in steel 10 mm
- Tool-less blade change
- Lock-off switch
- Die-cast aluminum base and chip cover
- High comfort and safe grips
- LED light for visualizing easily the cutting line
- 0-2600 strokes per minute!
- Air cooled charging system
- Lithium battery
- 18V and 300 Watts power consumption
The Makita jigsaw is designed to make cutting easier and faster; it’s incredibly light-weighted (only 2.8 kg), and the lithium ion battery consumes only 300 watts.
Despite this minimum level of energy consumption, it delivers almost 2600 strokes per minute, so cutting thick pieces of wood is now a task that takes a few minutes instead of hours.
You can even control the number of strokes per minute because this model has a speed knob, varying the number of strokes according to the surface you are about to cut not only improves the precision of the cut, but also saves energy from your battery.
This speed knob can be changed while you are using the jigsaw, simply change the speed from 1 to 7, which is the 2600 stroke per minute option. This feature is perfect for surfaces that have different types of thickness, or when you need a deep cut at the beginning but a light one in the end.
There’s no need to use the 2600 stroke option when you are cutting a thin piece of plastic or wood; sure, it will save you time, but it will drain the battery faster and since it’s such a thin surface, it may result in an uneven cut.
Adjusting the speed know also makes easier to control speed and precision even with gloves on, which a common problem with other jigsaws in the market.
Just like when using smartphones with gloves, not feeling directly the object we are using creates a barrier between how we think it works and how the object actually works, hence, it takes a while for us to use it correctly.
Fortunately, Makita is an enterprise fully dedicated to manufacturing construction tools and they dedicated a lot of time studying the best way to design their products to make these tasks easier and safer.
Also, the Makita Jigsaw has three orbital settings that allow you to vary the intensity and aggressiveness of the cut, so if you want to cut a straight line or a curved one, this jigsaw has you covered, just adapt it to your needs.
But let’s talk about another precision tool this jigsaw includes: the LED light at the bottom, it will show you if you are truly in the right direction, especially in areas that are not well illuminated.
And for those cases where the dust won’t let you see where you are cutting, the Makita Jigsaw has an inner dust blower and debris from the cut-line to improve your visibility.
But, wait for it! Tired of all the mess around you after cutting wood? You also have a dust nozzle that can get connected to your vacuum cleaner, it’s behind the blade and it will not only help you with the visibility, it will also help you with the after-cutting dust mess.
Why Should You Get a Makita DJV180Z Jigsaw?
Now that we have talked about many of the features this Makita jigsaw has to offer, let’s get down to business and tell you exactly why this is one of the best jigsaws you could ever get your hands on.
Some people argue about the pros and cons of a cordless jigsaw; many think that it’s comfortable but the need of continually charge it during the day delays the job to be done, therefore, it’s particularly useful.
We think the opposite, a good cordless jigsaw only needs a powerful battery and smart use.
Besides, if you ever need to use the jigsaw upside down or rotate it often (let’s say, when you need a specific cut of metal or wood from a lower angle), it would be a task extremely difficult to achieve with a cord hanging from the jigsaw.
Not to mention that cords get damaged way too often, they don’t last as much as the machine so you would need a replacement sooner than expected.
Another excellent reason to get this product is the lithium ion battery, it delivers up to 430% more run time than other known jigsaws, like the models from Ni-Cad and Ni-MH. This battery can last up to two hours in use, and only takes 40 minutes to fully charge.
Of course, you are not going to be using the jigsaw for two straight hours, but it could last a whole day of cutting or drilling work with several pauses.
And talking about pauses, other jigsaws force you to stop your work for several minutes because you need to rotate the base to reach a better angle or to cut specific curved surfaces; fortunately, this is a past problem with the Makita jigsaw.
This model has an easy to remove base, just take away the lock, adjust the base to the desired angle (up to 45 degrees), lock It again and you are good to go. You could also replace it with a different base (curved one, for example) for difficult surfaces in only 10 seconds.
Another issue with the base of other jigsaws is that some can scratch the surface you are cutting by accident, that’s why the Makita DJV180Z model includes a plastic anti-scratch base, smooth enough to slide through the roughest surfaces without leaving any mark.
Let’s talk about the blade now, if you have used other jigsaws before you probably understand how frustrating it can be to change it when it needs a replacement or when you simply need a different edge.
Makita has solved this issue with a tool-less blade change system, all you have to do is flip the compartment of the blade and it will fall easily, then you grab a new one and put it in the corresponding blade cavity, it will also lock automatically.
We do recommend doing this without the battery attached to the jigsaw, just in case, if you do not wish to do this, it’s completely fine because you have a lock and unlock button that allows the machine to start or to remain off for the time you want it to.
And now the handle, it’s extremely important for a jigsaw to be as steady as possible, not only to get a clean cut, but also to protect the user.
The handle of this Makita jigsaw is fitted with rubber to significantly reduce vibrations, however, if you use at its top speed out of a sudden, your arm will shake a little. The good part is that, even if its power makes you shake, the handle is comfortable and strong enough to grab it safely and reduce the chance of dropping it by accident.
In case of any unexpected trouble, it doesn’t really matter if you are right-handed or left-handed because this model has
The Features That We Didn’t Like
Let’s get this clear, the Makita DJV180Z is an excellent tool and probably one of the best jigsaws in the market, however, not everything that glitters is gold, so here are some features we didn’t find particularly good in this model:
- It has so much power that restarting the cutting task without taking the jigsaw away from the wood or metal could make your arm shake and damage the cut, to solve this simply adapt the speed to the lowest level before getting to the spot you want to keep cutting or simply separate the machine from the wood and get in slowly.
- The battery is amazing, but the company won’t sell the whole set. You only get the jigsaw and the battery is sold separately, it may a big disadvantage, but if you wish you could turn into something good, because if you prefer a different type of battery you can attach it to the unit and work with it.
- The dust nuzzle that can get connected to a vacuum cleaner is also extremely useful, but it can be a little annoying to use at the beginning because, of course, it’s a thicker tube than a regular jigsaw cord, so if you really want to safe so cleaning time, you can just practice how to use it comfortably.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
Some people may think that a 2.8 kg jigsaw is too heavy for this kind of duty, what we think is that you need some natural weight for these king of tools, otherwise you would have to use extra force from your body to keep it steady.
Besides, 500 g of that weight actually belongs to the battery, so the way we see it, the weight is just perfect.
The soft start speed level is ideal to test the machine on new surfaces, if you don’t know how well it’s going to cut, use the lowest speed level and easily increase it with the speed knob until you feel comfortable.
The handle is great, the power is amazing, and the LED light comes in handy. Definitely a product you would like to buy if you work cutting wood and other materials.
Since it also has many safety features, we consider it a perfectly safe tool.
Now, you can find this model in different stores and the price is not particularly high. Between £150 without the battery and up to £230 with it. We recommend buying two batteries so you can charge one while using the other to save some time.
Generally speaking, our Makita DJV180Z review is completely positive. It delivers control, comfort, convenience, and performance in a compact size, everything you expect from a small jigsaw.
Makita DJV180Z 18v Jigsaw
Weighing only 2.8Kg, the Makita DJV180Z is a lightweight cordless jigsaw that runs on an 18V Makita LXT Lithium-Ion battery with a power consumption of only 300 Watts. The jigsaw has a maximum no-load number of strokes per minute of 2600 strokes. Each stroke is 26mm (1 inch).
The Makita DJV180Z contains a large variable speed knob that controls the number of strokes per minute and therefore how long one can use the jigsaw since higher speeds consume the battery faster. The large knob also makes it easier to control the speed even with gloves on. The tool also contains 3 orbital settings for varying the intensity and aggressiveness of the cut along with a straight cut mode for making straight cuts. The blade allows cutting of a maximum of 135mm in wood and 10mm in metals.
With a bottom bevel that swivels up to 45 degrees, the DJV180Z can cut sideways on the workpiece easily and accurately. A heavy gauge precision machine base ensures accurate cutting. An inbuilt dust blower blows dust and debris from the cut-line for easy visibility. This is enhanced by the presence of an LED light at the bottom of the jigsaw that provides lighting in working areas that are not well lit. A dust nozzle that can be connected to a vacuum cleaner is placed just behind the blade to help clear dust from the cutting path.
Installed with a tool-less blade change system, releasing the blade is a walk in the park while avoiding the discomfort and possible injury that may resort from handling the hot blade. The handle of the Makita DJV180Z is also fitted with rubber to reduce vibrations during cutting and therefore provide a comfortable user experience. It’s quite substantial weight assists in maintaining the jigsaw on the cut-line. A plastic anti-scratch base prevents the tool from scratching the work piece. The DJV180Z has a soft start feature making the jigsaw ease into action instead of jostling.
The Makita DJV180Z has a shortcoming; it comes as body only and one has to buy the battery separately.
